In short
For sunny Pretoria lawns, kikuyu and Cynodon grasses are the usual choices; for areas with some shade, grasses such as LM Berea or buffalo grass tend to do better. Warm-season grasses go dormant and brown with winter frost and green up again in spring. Match the grass to the sun, use and watering each part of your garden gets.
Start with sun and use
Most lawn problems come from the wrong grass in the wrong spot. Before choosing, note how many hours of direct sun each area gets in summer, whether children and dogs will use it hard, and how you will water it.
Common lawn grasses compared
| Grass | Sun | Wear | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kikuyu | Full sun | High | Vigorous and quick to repair; spreads into beds and needs firm edging; browns with frost. |
| Cynodon types | Full sun | Medium to high | Fine leaf and a neat finish; copes with dry spells; browns with frost. |
| LM Berea | Sun to partial shade | Medium | Soft and slow-growing, so it needs less mowing; a common choice for shadier lawns. |
| Buffalo grass | Sun to partial shade | Medium | Broad leaf; tolerates some shade; best kept out of very cold, frosty pockets. |

What about deep shade?
No lawn grass thrives in deep shade under dense trees or on the south side of high walls. Rather than fighting a lawn that thins every year, consider shade-loving groundcovers, mulched beds or paving or decorative stone in those areas.
Winter colour in Pretoria
Pretoria's dry, frosty winters turn warm-season lawns such as kikuyu and Cynodon a straw colour, usually from around June. This is dormancy, and the grass recovers when warmer weather and rain return in spring. Watering a dormant lawn heavily will not keep it green and wastes water.
Before you lay a new lawn
- Remove the old grass and weeds completely.
- Loosen compacted soil and improve it where needed.
- Level with a gentle fall away from buildings for storm water.
- Plan watering for the first two to three weeks, ideally with irrigation.
- Lay in spring or summer for the fastest rooting.
See our lawn installation service for how we do it.
Lawn care through the year in Pretoria
- Spring (September to November): scarify or aerate if the lawn is compacted, top-dress hollows, and feed once growth starts.
- Summer (December to February): mow often and high, water deeply when there has been no rain, and feed again mid-season.
- Autumn (March to May): reduce feeding, keep mowing as growth slows, and fix bare patches while the soil is still warm.
- Winter (June to August): mow rarely, water lightly, and leave dormant grass to rest until spring.
Our garden maintenance visits follow the same seasonal rhythm.
